                                                               King-Indian def.

The King's Indian is a hypermodern opening, where Black deliberately allows White control of the centre with his pawns, with the view to subsequently challenging it with the moves ...e5 or ...c5.  An interesting fact is that until the mid-1930s, it was generally regarded as a highly suspect opening...But today, it sound like a pretty solid an interresting opening.  The Ex-World Champion Garry Kasparov, was a lover of this opening.

In this post, we will see 9 differents variations of this defence.  They will be : the Baïonnette variation, Néo-Grunfeld variation, the transposed variation, the 3.Nc3-Bg7 4.e4 variation, the Aronin Taimanov variation, the Benko attack, the gambit Florentin, the Saemisch variation and finnally, the double variation.

2- Néo-Grunfeld variation section:

Here, some important points for this variation about why Black should avoid this variation...

  1. White gets a solid center and it is extremely hard for black to get any further break through with d5 or f5
  2. White's threat to play Nd5 and expand his space further needs to be stopped at some point with c6 which leads to a huge weakness at d6 in the semi open file.
  3. Since black is not able to break through, it generally leads to very cramped inactive positions for black.

More about planning section:

White

Many players feel uncomfortable playing against the KID. My impression is that many players are simply surprised by the ferocity of the attack.

1) Be quick with the attack on the queenside and keep an eye on the Kingside attack.

2) Try to exchange off some of Black's most dangerous attacking piece. Like the exchange of Black's light-squared bishop heavily reduces the danger for white.

3) Restrain Black's attack as long as possible, especially the ...g5-g4 break.

4) Open up as many files as possible.

Black

Black's Plan is relatively simple. Once he gets f5-f4 he has to push the g-pawn to g4-g3 after which he achieves a range of advantages.

1) Space for his pieces to manoeuvre .

2) White's defensive pieces have little room in which to manoeuvre .

3) White's king is often restricted to the back rank.

4) Sacrifice a couple of pawns or an exchange to save the c8-Bishop which is vital for the attack.

5) Watch out for tactics. At any point Black may have to sacrifice a piece or two to get the White King out of its shelter.
