There used to be a good article by Andrew Martin on the internet recommending the following line of the Classical Defence, as used by Capablanca. I tried it a few times, with good results.
I play the Silican usually to avoid Ruy Lopez theory. Because e5 has not been played, the ruy lopez loses most of its appeal.
I like the g6 line... the resulting middlegames are different than the rest of the Ruy Lopez, and most of the danger is in the early opening... so you can focus and play the opening phase carefully, and after that you're set.
Personally I like the Burn variation of Bird's Defence (Attack?), Alapin's 3...Bb4 and the Open
