Best Openings as Black

What do you guys think the best openings as black are? I think Sicillian and Caro-Kann are nice, I think the Spanish Opening kind of gives black some oppurtunities to fight back, but Italian is kind of good for white.

What a freaking joke! The Spanish is good for Black and the Italian good for White? Nobody would play 1...e5/2...Nc6 if it was good for White. All "normal" openings are a very slight edge for White and no more!

You play what you know. I had a rated game tonight at the club (over the board). I was Black, it was a Petroff, and I won. Just because the Petroff works for me doesn't mean it works for everybody. There is no "best". There are merely a FINITE number of sound responses to 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4, etc.

I like to play c5 against e4 and Nf3 against d4

French Defense is a peace of mind and relaxing after a few games. The branches are not too complicated, and the routines are easy to remember. The defense is not easily penetrated. If you want to take a little rest, use French Defense.

I personally tried the French defense, but I find it lets the queen side too vulnerable. So now, I'm principally using the Pirc defense against e4 and e3 openings.

Clearly you don't know the French.

As one that has played the French for 30 years, and my primary weapon roughly 26 of those 30 years, Black's queenside doesn't end up weak. That's his strength. The kingside is where Black gets killed if he gets killed at all. With the Light-Squared Bishop behind the pawn chain, squares like h7 are a big problem for Black, especially if he's castled there. The French Defense and the Colle System are the two openings where Black must always watch out for the Greek Gift Sacrifice (Bishop sacrifice on h7). Black's issues are not on the queenside if Black knows what he's doing in the French Defense.
