To learn the basics of opening play, strategy and tactics, follow the history of chess. Start out with 1.e4 e5 (and play the King's Gambit, the Vienna Game, Bishops Opening, Giuoco Piano) and 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6/2.dxc4 (and play the Queen's Gambit Accepted and Declined), and then move on to the more asymmetrical openings later on.

Italian game was my first opening, and i really recommend it. Kings gambit also gives you a nice pawn centre, and contains lots of tactics, wich should be the strenght of an beginner

I wish I could stop reading this type of threads, and wasting time on this subject.

I have sought a repertoire for years. Switching between 1.e4 and 1.d4, and different black defences. And still today I'm not sure if I'm playing the right openings for me.

My solution to this is stop switching openings and spend my study time mostly on tactics and analysing my own games.

Actually this is a superb idea.

What I am going to say will sound weird. Start by playing 'Chess 960' games on chess.com

Chess 960 is a variant where the pieces are arranged almost randomly at the start of the game. This means that there is NO opening theory, so your opponent won't beat you because she knows more opening theory than you do.

It will force you to think about opening principles (control the centre, develop the pieces etc) without worrying about traps.

Then after a while, go back to standard chess.
