An interesting opening, and highly recommended for beginners. Five reasons come to mind:

(1) After 1 e4, White is often vulnerable to prematurely developing either the Queen or light squared bishop. By Ke2 White brilliantly prevents this. Prophylaxis that Nimzowitch himself would be proud of.

(2) The King belongs on a central square from which it can command its forces. Stuck on g1 or c1 it's often hard to see what's going on.

(3) By Ke2 White starts to clear the back rank in order to connect the heavy pieces (rooks and Queen).

(4) The King is a very powerful force in the endgame. It's never too early to be thinking about this.

(5) Ke2 immediately makes Black's years of opening study redundant. As such White has a clear advantage as Black will be under pressure to prove Ke2 'incorrect'.

 Well said!

Also, beginners should keep in mind that Ke2 is an extremely strong move as it not only threatens mate in approximately 20 - 500 moves, it develops the king which is usually hidden away in the corner of the board.  This is also an example of hypermodern play, which states that the center can be controlled by pieces.  So why not control the center with the king.  The king is one of the few pieces that can cover three center tiles!

**Warning: Because of several issues regarding the validity of this opening, be warned that playing 2. Ke2 is bad.  The king immediately losses his right to castle, blocks the bishop and queen, and opens himself to attack.  Getting the king back to safety will also take time whereas the opponent will be developing his/her pieces for attack.  Beginners, study opening theory (not actually openings) and always play with those concepts in mind.  Also always try to play different openings. Soon after a while, you will get a feel for a certain opening.

THIS POST IS NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES!!!

....but it is really safe to put up a Bongcloud Attack in the microwave owen? The Bongcloud Attack is strong and serious stuff. We need to go to extremes to protect innocent begginers from the adverse events from appyling the Bongcloud Attack in irony immune zones.

The Boungcloud attack has the advantage of making your opponent wonder what you are smoking. And as we know, if we can get him/her thinking about anything besides chess, this is a good thing.

I love sneaky advantages right out of the gate.

When I interviewed Lenny as to why this choice of opening he responded: "The King is the most pwerful piece on the board mann!!!"   (Seriously, he did say this)

This thread is a riot!

after reading this thread I think I just lost 500 rating points !Cry

You may lose IQ points simply by standing downwind of Lenny Bongcloud.

On a serious note,  I play the Vienna Gambit as white and have had various unusual responses chucked at me on this site.  In such open games, normal constraints about piece values and development often go out the window due to tactical considerations.  I produce two opening variations below.

The first was a game played on here against a decent player who didnt want to retreat his N. I should have lost the game, but due to an oversight on his part I came back to win.  I later found the correct move and this was confirmed by a friend who is an extremely strong player. (See notes)

The second is a book line of the Vienna Gambit.

It pains me to see everyone disrespecting the Boungcloud opening. I've been playing it for years, and every time I do I win hands down. Children, forget all of the naysayers on this thread who tell you "Disclaimer..." fill in the blank. Boungcloud is amazing. The opening is amazing. Even Kasparov cannot fathom the incalculable permutations of the Boungcloud and its devastating repertoire of tactical weapons. I pity all of you. *disclaimer

The marketing department blurped out the following advertisement: "1 e4 any 2. Ke2 and then what?" which kinda said it all. Head of Sales concluded that the last 2000 empty white pages in the three volume set would be a bit be a bit too much space for private notes.

Obvoiusly those 2000 pages aren't for notes (although one could easily fill them with analysis of this complex opening), to quote Lenny himself, "That extra paper's for rolling, man!".

Now there is the most knowledgeable comment on the Boungcloud variant. Although Emanuel Lasker exercised that variant against grand masters, his best game with the Boungcloud attack novelty – at that time – was against Grand master Steinitz in 1896.Mr. Boungcloud is reaffirming that novelty in chess.com. Other grand masters have elevated that variation and have later introduced the delayed Boungcloud. The delayed Boungcloud attack is now a recognized tactic above all towards the end game.

The funniest thing about this whole thread are the people that don't realize it's a joke. I will, however, try the Bongcloud (that must be the correct spelling) the next time I play with my friends, just for kicks. Good times, people! F-ing hilarious!

"Delaying the Bongcloud attack is like kissing your sister."

 Now that is funny!

Also, yes, the other pieces are cowards. The pawns are too small and march in a lame line like British soldiers from the 1700's, the knights have to hop out of the way all the time, the bishops are peace-makers, the rooks - don't get me started on the rooks, and the Queen, well - she plays like a girl. Enough said. Long live the Boungcloud King.

Before all the women on this site start bashing me about the Queen remark...look up the word humor. (Or humour.) Laughing

"Boungcloud" is actually the correct spelling if you look at the first post AND the spelling of this thread. Yell

That is all. Wink

The game is under way.  I will uphold the honour of the Bongcloud Opening.

I just read this whole thread....my jaw hurts Tongue out

Reading about the bongcloud attack brings back found memories. Speed chess at the park. Impromptu games at the library. Back in the seventies inexperienced players would demand concessions before they would play you. Take one or both of your rooks. Or even the queen if they could. But after the discovery of the Bongcloud attack I could again use all my pieces. The first time I used Bongcloud I held my breathe for so long I got dizzy. Never knowing if the novice recognized the seriousness of that attack. Nothing is more satisfying than to see an overconfident opponent get blindsided by an opening he deems inferior. I am truly amazed and apalled that Bongcloud is being discussed in open forum. It is an opening that only the truly gifted can apply successfully. You should pay homage to he that developed it, and those of you that do not understand it's application will never appreciate it's true power or magnitude.

Well said, brother. Well said.

Although not eveyone would agree with his political views, no one can deny the genius of Lenny Bongcloud. I once was fortunate enough to witness him play a simultaneous exhibition against 24 club players in Sacramento California. Bongcloud finished the simul in an astonishing 52 minutes! His record? A perfect 0-24.
