I played the Portuguese some time ago. Mostly due to these messy complications. Never got much of it over the board. White has a ton of quiet and annoying options based on just playing nf3, bb5+, be2. In fact this is what I play as white when I encounter this line. Takes almost all of the fun out of black's opening. Hence I gave it up.

This is an opening I have seen more than one online blitz opponent use that can get you into trouble if you play natural moves like the following.
Instead when black offers the e6 pawn it should be declined with Nc3. If black takes the pawn white has the tactical theme g4-g5 and recapturing the pawn with the knight preserving his pawn structure.
Note the computer recommends Nd7 instead of Nh5 for black. The knight is somewhat loose here as its defender can be deflected with f4-f5 and a queen-bishop battery can be setup against the stranded knight.
