So I've spent the past few days trying to learn the Budapest defense/gambit/opening becuz I saw Homer Simpson use it on the Simpsons. I have the basic understanding of it but it is making my head hurt that every video I watch is a different variation and I guess you could say more to learn.

Should I stick to one variation for now or should I learn all there is to know about the Budapest.

Have you had any chances to play it?

I would pick one and give it a try. You are unlikely to find yourself facing a booked up 700 rated player.

I haven't had a chance to play it yet. Most of the people I play on here are just throwing pieces around for the most part.

I need some new openings though. I play the same on over and over. I figure I may need four. One for d4 and one for e4 playing as white. And two for black to counter those. I was thinking about the Budapest and the dragon. I don't know. I do know I'll be an unconventional player. In thend I want to make it my own, if that makes since.

The thing that got me into playing the Budapest is that there's an unusually good article about it on Wikipedia. When you've read that, you have all you need to get started. Eventually you might want also to read Viktor Moskalenko's excellent book on it, depending on how serious you are about chess study. You're right that a lot of White players will try to sidestep it, but that's not the best way to play and you should get a decent game.

I'm going to check that wiki page out. Thanks!
