Bugayev Attack in the Polish Opening
its basically a sideline of the sokolsky which plays like a st. george defense a move up. The extra tempi actually makes the position a bit more viable although the computer still slightly prefers black. You would usually play if you already comfortable with the bxb4 bxe5 mainline but would like to add more variety or really want a more closed position. A 1.b4 player should already be comfortable agaisnt the 1.d5 2.qd6 3.e5 as well as the 1.e5 2.f6 lines which give him a big center so playing the Bugayev shoudnt be much more difficult as it plays similarly, although without the slight concession of those move orders.
Actually the extra tempo on the st george sometimes allow interesting possibilities. For example 1.b4 e5 2.a3 d5 3.bb2 bd6 4.nf3 qe7 5. c4! (threatening c5 with a trapped bishop, if c6, cxd5, nc3 and nb4 is pleasant for white) dxc4 6. e4!? is an interesting idea , usually in these positions, e3 is more thematically correct, but e4 allows for interesting chess.
