Building a long lasting opening repertoire

Hi all,

Looking to compile a few openings that will benefit me in the long run. I enjoy playing the London system as white for the positions and tactics. What are some openings you'd recommend for beginners for e4, d4, and as white?

A beginner should avoid the Queen’s Gambit and the French Defense and play open games instead! While he may not win as many games at first, he will in the long run be amply compensated by acquiring a thorough knowledge of the game.

The Vienna is a great opening for white, and if you’re interested in gambits there also happens to be one for the Vienna. You could also learn the Italian or the much more deadly Fried Liver which are brilliant and aggressive attacks.

I’m more of a gambit player, so I use gambits such as the Danish, Vienna, Englund, Blackmar-Diemer, Halloween, and at times the Icelandic.

Gambits can be trickier, but if you perfect them you’ll surprise your opponents.

I know I’m a lower-rated player, but I stick to my guns and follow the fundamentals.

Play what you enjoy. If you like the London system stick with that. Against e4 try a couple of different openings (french, caro-kann, Sicilian, e5, etc…) and see which openings give you positions you like to play. Same with d4. Experiment for a couple of weeks and see what you like. Everyone is different and I might say you should play a certain opening that I play but it might not be for you. Hope this helps.

Center game as white and Center Counter Game (AKA The Scandinavian) will give you similar positions as white and black. The Center Game if you choose to can go into lines of different 1.e4 openings where d4 is pushed. You may also get similar development as to the London with all minor pieces developed fairly quickly in a solid game.

If you enjoy the London, then by all means stick to it. It is good. Each time you play it you accumulate knowledge useful for next games.
Similar openings for black are the Caro-Kann Defence 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 and the Slav Defence 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6. Those are solid and long lasting.
