I tend to/always play Caro-Kann as black against 1.e4 and have no trouble in the moves I encounter at my level BUT I really struggle against 3.e5, (1.e4 c6, 2.d4 d5, 3.e5) and can't seem to make any progress.
I've tried both the two moves used at master level seemingly, Bf5 and c5 and seem to have had more success with c5 but only in games where my opponent has simply left his d pawn undefended or 4.dxc4.
The problem with both is that I can't seem to deal with white's space advantage, and with the move Bf5 you lose two natural development squares with the knight as opposed to just one (Nc6) with other variations.
I've been trying to hit white's d-pawn in my games to damage the pawn chain, but have had little or no success. I'm not asking for a long variation of moves just some tips from anyone who is used to the variation as black (or white I guess).
Thanks in advance.
