Hi all,

I am preparing for an OTB tournament and I only have the sicilian for my black 1.e4 reportoire. I would like to learn the Caro-Kann to add some solidity and variety but I don't know which variation to study. I was looking at some Karpov games in my database and he seemed to use 4...Nd7 and 4...Bf5 with equal success. I also like 4...Nf6.

The most important factor in choosing one of these openings for me would be how much fun is it to study and play but I would like a solid variation as well. Thank you!

Which is your preference between 4...Bf5 and 4...Nd7  and for 4...Nf6 do you like 5...exf6 or 5...gxf6?

From the Bf5 and Nd7 lines I would like a solid opening and Nf6 would be more of a fun opening.

I'm a fan of GM Shankland's repertoire. It's almost identical to the Schandorff book, so your best bet is to start with Shankland's videos on this site (you'll need to upgrade to diamond for one month to watch them). If after watching those vids you decide you really like the CK, the next step would be to study Schandorff's book for more detailed lines.

In case you're wondering, the rep is based on Bf5 against the advance, kingside castling against the classical, and two knights defense against the Panov.
