1. King safety (typically castling)
2. Control the middle or exert influence on it (in the case of modern openings)
3. Deploy pieces. Don't use your pieces to attack when you only have 2 or 3 out. This is superfitial and won't work against good opponents
4. Start memorizing book lines but remember these principles for when it gets off book
