Sounds idiotic and also sounds like you cannot describe your own rules properly. Your "rules" say nothing beyond the 5th rank and no captures, but your visuals show nothing beyond the 4th rank. You can tell what rank is the 5th rank from each player's perspective by using descriptive notation.
Following YOUR rules would allow 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 and now 3.exd5 or 3...dxe4 would be illegal but 3.e5 would be legal (nothing BEYOND the 5th rank. Does not say you can't go TO your 5th rank. So with your rules, 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 c4 (4...cxd4 illegal) 5.f4 b5 etc is all legal.
Whether your intention is 5th or 4th, it is totally STUPID. Defeats the whole purpose of strategy. The whole point of 1...c5 or 1...e5 against e4 is to stop d4 or if it is played, it is captured and White does not get the big center with e4/d4. The whole point of the Caro-Kann and French is to Attack e4 and again prevent the big center. By forcing the pawn to advance if it wants to stay on the board, there are far more weak squares for White with a d4-e5 structure compared to d4-e4.
The no capture rule is moronic!
I was thinking what would be some of the creative openings that would show up if a modified version of chess was tried in casual play, with the following rules:
"For the first 10 moves, no piece/pawn to move beyond the 4th rank and no captures will be made"
Naturally this will force the players to develop their pieces quite freely and deploy them keeping in mind the safety of the king as well as aesthetics.
For instance, this might be a setup:
Or this:
I feel this chess variant might liberate both colors from being dictated by the play of the other color, giving more creative options instead of the standard openings. Amateur players might try this and find it more attractive than higher level players who would probably not indulge in such a version of chess which wont directly improve their game. But that's just me. So I was wondering if this would in fact limit the game even more and develop fixed standard setups after 10 moves by each player, or would this cause more diversity in the games? And what would your choice of setup as white/black be?
EDIT: 4th rank, not 5th.
