d4 then is there a good solid response?

Besides you don't want to play players with 1500 online ratings. Most of them are craps and fishes, wasting your time. Sorry.

This was comment that didn't post:

There were no internet nor chess.com. And you wanted to play players of >500 rating above you.

Even if there had been internet, it cost a lot more than I paid the players. So, they had my benefits and i had theirs.

Okay, say d5, the white plays c4.  Is there some lesser known solid response for black without jamming up the center or using c6 or e6?  Or rather than d5 for black, is there another lesser known good solid response?  Thanks for any help.

QGA is a very good and slightly unpopular defence against 1.d4

Yea because 1800 is any better.

Think I'll try the Budapest Defense and that Albin Counter Gambit looks good (I've tried it, but don't know many lines in it yet)  Thanks all.

I like all these new names.

This. Pieces get good, natural squares, smooth play and it starts on move 2!.

Something else to add from my experience. When I played 1.d4 I never really studied how to play against the QGA, whites pieces seem to have natural squares so it never seemed to matter, and most people who captured were weaker anyway.

I think the above is one of the reasons it is so under rated, but while all the white players are off studying how to solve their problems against the grunfeld, KID, Nimzo etc the QGA becomes neglected, but it can be a vry tough opening to play against in the hands of a knowledgable player.

Yes, agree. QGD, KID, KIA, Sicilian, Ruy Lopez, Nimzo, French, etc are not good and solid openings.

The only good opening is the only opening that is you don't move your pieces and let the clock runs out. Tyou can claim you lose on time. lol

Apology to OP.
