If White doesn't want to claim the center on move 1 I think Black should, so e5 , d5, or even c5 looks OK. My personal choice is e5 and if 2. Bb2 then Nc6. If he tries 3. Nf3 then just push e4 and after the Knight moves follow up with d5 and you have a nice share of the center.
defense against nimzowitch Larsen attack?

I prefer 1...e5 and after 2.Bb2 then 2...d6. Allows super easy play afterwards with stuff like Nf6, Be7, c6, 0-0, etc.
Or maybe
There is really a lot of ways it can go. But you've staked a claim in the center while white hasn't and your play is easy and you won't get hoodwinked by a petline.
*Edit* I forgot to mention that my suggested line avoids a common mainline:
This is chapter 1 in my nimzo-larsen book. OFC, there's nothing wrong with this. It's just that I would wager most club players who play the nimzo due so, in part, for the surprise factor, have studied for the mainline and are probably hoping to get it. I figure why give that to them, when there are other logical and solid ways to defend?
this was played against me in a game and I had never seen it so I played nc6 but that was probably wrong so I was wondering if anyone had some tips?
