Does Anyone Hate Playing Black?

I'm new to chess and already find myself hating black.  It feels like I'm always on the defensive against people and have to be stuck in respond mode (same with playing against the computer too).

Any tips for which openings to use that can be more offensive (while not allowing myself to get beat up either)?  Would very much appreciate it!

Until recently I actually favored black. White and black have different systems and I happened to prefer the black ones. But -especially- on top level people are usually glad drawing with the black pieces.

As for more offensive openings, I'd suggest Sicilian even though it requires a decent understanding of the ideas behind the kind of positions that can occur. There's various Sicilian variations, the most popular being the Najdorf.

You could learn the Sicilian.  Or you could play 1. ...e6 and dominate.

I prefer to play black just because I like playing The French Defence and the Modern Benoni. The positions that arise from these defences I am used to playing (because I kinda understand the theory... ~)

Where as in White, I mostly (if not always) default to the Kings Gambit which is dynamic (but often short game)

Maybe you should try the French.

Does your opponent have to move in that way?

That's another thing I find is that people don't always move according to these setups that I read sometimes.  I'll bookmark this one to review though.  Thx!

Your problem isn't really the opening. In fact you're playing well most of the time. Sometimes you lose time in the opening by moving a single piece twice when there isn't a proper reason for it. You also miss some tactical shots by your opponent and sometimes ignore "x-ray" tactics (the most important in chess imo) in which your opponent is aiming pieces at your king.

You're playing the open games and these are fine. Switching now won't really fix the tactical issues and it's probably not worth it unless you simply want to try new things. The only tricky opening you play is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d3. Here 4...d5 is actually not the way to play here not because of some Ng5 but because White can usually put a lot of pressure on e5. So Black usually waits for a better time to play d5.

Get over it kid.  Chess ain't a one way street.  Half the games you'll be White.  The other half you'll be Black.  With the fact that White goes first, Black has no choice but to defend until he is able to nullify White's advantage, and only then can you attack.  It's like having an army of 9, each with a hand gun, taking on an army of 10, each with a semi-automatic machine gun.  You must defend first until you are able to nullify a couple of them, then when you get it to say, 9 hand gunners on 7 machine gunners, only then can you think about actually going out to attack them without getting your head chopped off!

Instead of resorting to unsound play, try learning defense.  You have to be able to play defense in any other sport.  Why should chess be any different?

You aren't going to get mated on the first move. Just develop and connect your rooks as soon as possible. If white attacks too early he may find his pieces out of position and uncoordinated.

you actually have a better chance of winning if you are black. here is why.black wins 70 percent or 65 percent and white wins 35 or 30 percent.i know what i am saying and it is true. i am not coo-coo.Tongue Out

Hope you're enjoying your LSD trip and 24-pack of bud light, because you are absolutely nuts.  Black in no way scores 65 to 70 percent.

I love playing with black. White has the first chance to make a mistake Tongue Out

I don't know why but i love playing black.Even my OTB scores are better as Black than white. But you need to be well prepared as Black because you have all the chances of wrong.

I like black, especially in speed games because white loses his time first! :-)

Many systems that you learn from the Black side can be used with White as well.

The converse does not obtain.

Learn to play "defense" and your opening prep is essentially done, at least until you decide to branch out into mainline white openings.

Very Simple.  Love Black First.  Smile
