I have just a quick question to ask you guys.  After 1.d4 f5, does it matter which comes first for white, 2.Nc3 or 2.g3 ?  From what I have been seeing, the next move is almost always followed by the other, but I was curious if there was a reason for the move order or if it didn't matter at all.

Thanks

2.g3 followed by 3.Nc3 ?!?

When your opponent plays 2.g3, they normally go  into main lines with Bg2/Nf3 /and c4.

2.Nc3 is an anti-Dutch line to trip up Black in the beginning or to avoid theory. g3 isn't even played in the main line of this anti-Dutch. Usually white plays an e3/Bd3 setup and castles long. It makes no sense to include g3 in this line. You wana get something going fast in the opening and such a move doesn't accomplish that. (Often white wants to play moves like Qf3, pressuring the f pawn)

If you meant to say is there a difference whether white plays 2.c4 followed by an eventual g3 or 2.g3 followed by an eentual c4, then no it doesn't matter. BUT, many players who play 2.c4 instead of 2.g3 probably don't even know the main lines of the Dutch..

Thanks for the input.  I appreciate it.  And yes, lavarook you are correct.  I went over my post twice to find any errors, and unfortunately I did misprint my notation.  I meant 2.g3 or 2.Nf3 for the main lines.

Conzipe, this is great: "An important thing to understand is that in the long-term a knight on c3 will usually be misplaced in queen pawn openings as white will need to push the c-pawn to take claim in the center. So white has to quickly justify placing a knight on c3 (or a knight on c6 as black) before it ends up being a positional drawback in the middlegame."

That is very enlightening.

Thanks to both of you for taking the time to respond.
