But Black can still play 1.d4 c5!
Don't worry though because after 1.b4!! White stops ...c5 and go on to win the endgame.

Should you not be a bit better at playing chess before you claim to know a move played by world champions and super GMs is bad ?
Not saying 1.d4 is wrong, just saying 1.e4 is viable as well.
So, -1.e4?? is bad because of 1..c5!
-1.c4 has some replies that promise black a good game, including 1..e5
Therefore, the best , move by white must be 1.e3! c5!? 2.e4!, although this is equal, at least white is not losing, as he would be after 1.e4?? c5!

Can't tell if trolling or stupid.
PS Get in your time machine and go back a couple weeks...warn Magnus about your new research findings so he doesn't play 1.e4 against Vishy and lose the match. Oh wait.
I say 1. a4, because you get control over b5 (hello, supporting a piece on b5!) and Ra3 on the next move...e4 is busted, try 1. a4.
You've got to be kidding me! I can't believe this is a forum by a 1890! Either this is some kind of sick joke or this guy is drunk. The greatest player that ever lived Bobby Fischer, his favorite first move was 1.e4. I'm pretty sure who would win between you and Fischer. Sorry, but this forum did not make me laugh.
anyway this is just trolling and crap troll logic but its fun to make these forums ya know. anyway you can play e4 if you can prepare for all these openings (sicilian, e4 e5, french, caro-kann, pirc, alekhine, modern, etc.) 1. d4 has a strategic nature so most of the openings are not extremely deep and you don't need to memorize much except against things like the nimzo
used to play e4 but now d4. But its not because I think e4 is inferior but just because I don't have much time studying theory so I just play the london against pretty much any black setup.
yeah play d4 so you can spend ur time improving ur chess instead of memorizing variations you will play like 1/10 times
Even if 1...c5 is very good, one needs to play quite mistake-free in order to be able to justify a difference in (statistical) performance of whatever opening it may be.
Say, you like the Sicilian. Your opponent plays 1.e4 and you play ...c5, and a few moves later he plays a weak (according to theory) move which you have no idea how to counter though. What you're going to do to keep your advantage?
That's the main reason people tend to avoid strong yet requiring accurate play openings - the necessity to either memorize much or be equally much accurate in in-game move choice decisionmaking. Not a (statistical) inferiority of the line.
I really don't need to do any analysis for this. after 1.e4, 1...c5 is black's most popular reply. It also scores extremely well and is very effective to play for a win with. however, 1.c4 is not nearly as popular, and is not played much at top level anymore. after 1.c4, black has many replies that score decently well. it is relatively easy to play. however 1...c5 after 1.e4 gives white problems. thus, according to top players whos games are in databases, 1.e4 hurts white after the reply 1...c5. therefore, e4 is bad PLAY D4
