Here is the champion of 1 a4

Have been playing 1.e4 most of my life. Now I am "ambidextrous". Allows me to be more flexible and less predictable. Twice as much work on theory though... Laughing

Against 1. e4 my coach is convincing me to give up 1...e5 which I've been playing for 4 decades and try the Sicilian.  Since I play 1. e4 I figure I'll get better at playing against it, if I play it as Black for a while.

Have you seen improvements in your results commensurate with the doubling of your workload?

It's hard to define "commensurate" in this situation. Generally speaking, I believe it will be beneficial for me in the long term. Any modern chess player should try to familiarize oneself with as many structures as possible. And it is always exciting to learn something totally new Smile

Yes!

It is like combining Fire and Ice! It helped me really visualize the board better than the past. But this when you play with both solid d4 and e4 openings.  One becomes more aware of playing the Opening than the opening your playing! Make sense? I think more about the situation on the board rather than how it should be handled in this opening. A difference in approach.

blitz play e4 actual game play d4

royalbishop

d4 will eat more of your opponents clock.

JaneBellamy

e4 vs d4, knights vs bishops, ... Aaaaah, the things our grandparents must have thought of before D-day.

royalbishop

The only reason why d4 keeps e4 around as d4 needs a sidekick.

No, e4 makes d4 think he (he? who cares!) keeps e4 around as a sidekick, but it's the other way around. So.... Buya (sHpEliNG)! Yes e-pawn you are my favourite. Yes, yes you are! [kisses everywhere]

royalbishop

?? You and e4 have been dreaming about what d4 has been doing for a long time......CRUSHING! (Save the applause yeah we know we are bad). We have single handled save the chess game and made it what it is today. Without us you be playing checkers.

royalbishop

Who slayed the Slav....d4. Who beat the King's Indian defense and took their Queen for ...... d4. Who made the Unorthodox change his name to Orthodox defense cause he was getting so bad to avoid being recognized...d4 that is who!

I heard that the Dead Sea papyrus scrolls are actually a theory book and that ye olde ruleths of chess were written on them. It came in two chapters . The first one handled the 1.e4 opening and as you might have guessed , chapter 2 was on the consequences of 1.d4.

Now the ancient priests kept arguing  about which chapter holds the key to the Lords true laws. Wars were fought over this debat , lots of 1.e4 and 1.d4 believers lost their lives because of this, but finally in 350 BC in ancient Israel ,  it was decided by a White squared Bishop named Diagnaton IV (a converted 1.d4 adept) that the whole matter was indecisive and that it was better to stick the damned book in a jar and throw it into the Dead Sea . Away with the rubbish he said , and away they did and behold for the following 2300 years there was  peace ........

Until NOW . Somebody dug up the scrolls , and it's happening all over again.

Well tell e4 to stop complaining about Najdorf.

Who is Najdorf say d4?

pps1

in actuall tournament games is shown that the main line ruy lopez is refuted to that it will end in a draw

the italian game gm think is worse because it leads a same kind a position as the ruy lopez but a tempi down

but i think you can just play

white is up a pawn black has good development and white king is in the centar. But if you play precist you will win.

d pawn oppenings are borring unless you play the qeens gambit which i play my self but some people hate because the game takes longer to play and its closed.c4/nf3 they both are the most borring oppenings(exception half of the games transpose in the KID without meeting the grunfeeld) the reason they are so borring neither side has weaknesess or advanteg white has only one tempo. So i reccomend to you to play the QG of the birds oppening you might say its stupid but get youre engine and youre trainer start developing your own lines and you will se its fun and improves chess plan making and creativite.

Actually, only patzers argue about e4 vs. d4. I never saw any player above 2200 to defend one or the other (except Fischer who liked e4 and hated d4). But usually, great chess players do not mix chess with petty emotions.

If you want a game where emotions and preferences play a big part, better play football or something. Chess is a game of logic.
