Hi everyone! I’d be interested to hear your opinions on this: in what ways and why do you think the move e5 or c5 is the better response to e4? How would you compare these two replies from your point of view?

No matter what people say, 1...e5 has always been the MOST SOUND response to 1.e4. It may not score the highest or be the most exciting, but Black's initial goal is to not die as he is on defense.

A lot depends on your tolerance for risk. The numbers I give below are not actual, but they illustrate the point.

Would you rather lose 20% of your games, but only win 17% of your games?

Or would you rather lose 40% of your games but win 38% of your games?

The former type of player should play 1...e5. The risk taker willing to lose a lot, but also having better winning chances, should play 1...c5.

1… e5 is better, but it’s a matter of inches, not miles, and people deviate from best play after merely a few moves anyways, so what’s the point in choosing based on a theoretical single-digit centipawn advantage by the current supercomputer? Open, Sicilian, French, and Caro-Kann are all fine and dandy.

I like c5 better, because e5 leads to too boring positions, but I have to say that I like caro kaan(...) most.

I like e5 because there is less variation to what people play vs c5 where you could teach someone my level how to play against 3. Nf3 and they’d likely lose because I play 3. Nc3
