Are they complementary openings? I understand the plans and style are different but it seems like the piece placement can be similar.

They’re complementary in that you are playing the Sicilian Dragon Reversed as white with two tempi up. I think you will get an appreciation and enjoyment if you have prior Sicilian experience. As an example, what do you do with with those two tempi? It’s quite the luxury to play without a Yugoslav Attack on the tables.
On a secondary note, you also get transpositional opportunities such as the Catalan if these kind of things excite you.
I have had success with the Reversed Dragon within the last year at the 1300-1500 level but plan on switching to the Reversed Katalimov (2. b3 as noted in my rapid stats) for when I transition to the 1500-1700 level.
