One of the main theme in Berlin wall from black side is to avoid exchanging pieces as it favors White. Still in many games, black voluntarily plays ...Nh4 to exchange it with white's knight on f3. What is the strategic point of the move ...Nh4?

For example, in below game between Caruana - Karjakin, black plays ...Nh4 on move 12:

You are bit optimistic trying to get info on a professional opening like berlin,  in a forum where most of the players are "pipe and slippers" players, like myself. For example my impression was black was happy to hover off as many peices as possible, other than the bishop pair. Where did you get the opposite idea from?

TwoMove, I think you are right that black is happy to hover off as many pieces as possible, other than the bishop pair. I got the idea from some youtube video. Either it was wrongly explained in the video or I mis-understood it.
