So I’ve recently played my third tournament and was surrounded by grandpas and other people older than 40. One key difference between them and chess com players is their play style. Most of them tried to keep the game as alive as possible and even did a lot of romantic sacrifices. Anyways, with that, one grandpa playing as white, played this crazy opening against me. Started with a3, b3, c3, d3, e3, Nd2, Bb2. He crushed me in the middlegame.

I was amazed by this opening and checked it on lichess opening tool, and figured that a few people play it too. It even has a whopping 58% winrate against black playing 4 pawns and Nf6,Nc6.

I’m highly interested if this is a real system (like the cow opening or the double fiancetto)that you play to throw your opponents off guard. If yes, does it have a name?

I also played a couple games with it and managed to defeat a 2000 elo opponent in unrated 10min (he blundered badly)

hm, it’s bad don’t get me wrong, not developing pieces quick enough or going for any control of the center- however it’s unconventional nature may be good in confuse lower rated opponents

That sounds as if White was playing something inspired by the Hippopotamus Defence. Not great, but flexible and not refuted.
