Both positions start out as a French Defense. The top position could have transposed into a Caro Kann later if the moves 3.. c6 4.exd5 cxd5 5.c4. It isn't the best order of moves or suggested but that is one possible transposition.

So, I had a game on Chess.com where I was white with 1. d4 e6 2. e4 d5 and in reviewing the game it labeled the setup at the Caro Kann Panov Variation after the second moves were completed. But I always create new chapters for studying in Lichess after I play something, if something doesn't work right. So when I went to do that on Lichess, it labeled the same setup as the French Defense. I would have thought the former. So, which is it? Caro Kann Panov (Chess.com) or French Defense (Lichess).
Maybe the distinction is immaterial versus preparing a solid plan, yes. But, I'm annoyed about organizing my studies because I'd like to know where to actually file the study... Caro Kann lines or French Defense lines?
