@KnightChecked - This whole thing started with a bunch of CK players bashing the French Defense.  Team French banded together to teach them a lesson - we won that challenge 10 points to 4 (nine wins, three losses, two draws).  We then invited some Sicilian players to sign up for this challenge, hoping this will be more of a challenge.

The point is we're bashing CK players, not the CK itself.  The CK is not altogether bad (but the French Defense is most assuredly better), but the players who formed Team Caro-Kann had some very wrong notions about the French Defense, which is why Team French won 5 of 7 games with the black pieces, including a Board 1 victory against a National Master.

Ah.

Thank you for the explanation.

Honestly, I'm not sure why Caro-Kann or French players need to be at odds with each other. The openings are almost like siblings to each other.

(Then again, I have two young children, so I see firsthand how siblings love to fight...)

Also, what is with some of these openings? I get the feeling that this is not what you had in mind when you decided to compare the relative merits of the French Defense...

@LOrd_ulton I believe that Mr_winawer might have won by now the way you played in the opening

The French and the Caro-Kann aren't really siblings.  Many CK players are under the illusion that they are, because both openings move a pawn forward one space and prepare to support a d5 pawn thrust, but the comparisons end there.

In the French Defense, there is enduring central tension, or the tension gets resolved in black's favor.  In the Caro-Kann, initial tension is resolved immediately in white's favor, and subsequent tension, if it comes about at all, is not such an issue because white has time to overprotect d4.

The Caro-Kann really can be played passive and tranquil, while the French Defense must never be.  That was the central mistake the Team Caro made.  They were expecting French Defense games to play similarly to their own Caro-Kann games, and were simply unprepared for the speed of our central counterattacks.

As for the Board 5 French game, it's important to see "strange" alternate lines from time to time.

I won't comment further, because I don't think I can without giving both players ideas.  I expect this will be a good game to review once it's finished.

We're back even.

Looking at the Board 3 French game:

Obviously, 13. ..Qf6?? is a serious mistake, but I don't like the computer recommendation of Qe7 either.  The tempo-gaining 13. ..Bd6! seems best to me, with 14. ..e5! to follow.  With the d-pawn safely blockaded and already targeted, black can build pressure in the center and along the open g-file.

I agree Bd6 should have been played, and I should have repeated moves if he wanted to and drew
