General Opening Principle--

I have noticed a problem that I am sure is very common for beginners: I am very good at one opening (the ruy lopez as white), but I struggle tremendously when other openings are played.  Mostly because I thoroughly understand the goals and ideas in the ruy lopez, where can I go to learn the ideas and goals behind other openings?  I would like to learn more about the italian game, and queens gambit declined most specifically.

Some of us think that it can be useful to use books like First Steps: 1 e4 e5 and First Steps: Queen's Gambit

as sources of games with explanations intended for those just starting to learn about an opening.

There's also a book called "The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings". Just sayin'. It's pretty old so the lines in it will be rather dated, but the ideas involved will still be useful.
