The English gets its name from the English player Howard Staunton who played it in the 1840's. It didn't inspire his contemporaries and only caught on in the twentieth century. You will find it expertly played by Botvinnik, Karpov and Kasarov who all used it during their world championship matches. Bobby Fischer created a stir when he switched to it from the King's Pawn opening against Spassky in 1972.
