Good Beginner Opening for black

Hello Chess Friends,

I'm searching  for  a good opening system for at least 1e4 and 1d4 that are fun to play( maybe a few opening traps!) and suitable for for a 1300-1400 correspondance player here on chess.com.

I expect that i'm going to get hung drawn and quartered  by the majority of people here for even mentioning  the study of openings before i'm at least a super grandmaster but i really do enjoy openings!

Good opening.... hmmm.... The Pirc Defense , the French Defense The Slav/Semi-Slav these are good but are not very Fun to play. if u want something fun but  a little risky is the Damiano Defense. its risky becuase of e4-e5 nf3-f6 white can sacriface the knight by playing Nxe5 and after the pawn recaptures there is a Deadly Attack by White Starting with the Move Qh5+. g6 is not playable becauce Qxe5+ forking both of the king and rook. so black is forced to go ke7 exposing his king. if u ever play the damiano defense if knight sacrifaces itself don't ever accept it! instead play g6. getting ready to fienchetto bishop develop the knight and castile kingside. also you may try the sicillian Dragon or The Sicillian Kan.

Are you joking? That's a horrible opening!

Just looked into this. looks fun,but too much like a suicide misson for me!

Rich-Mcd this is not horrible opening or a suicide mission. this opening was played in the game Fischer-McGregor where the game was draw.

Yes, it is a horrible opening. The move 2...f6? weakens the kingside, exposes the king, and takes away the knight's best square.

Remember that i am a 1300-1400 player, what concerns me is if i play 2...f6 and the bluff does not work, will i have the skill to get me out of the opening safely?

It is also noteworthy that this match was part of a simuli.

I suppose it would be appropiate to play e4/d4 as white and e5/d5 as black. About traps, I think you only should study them in order to avoid them.

Play the Marshall Gambit! You will learn a lot of good tactics.

Furthermore, the Marshall Gambit is completely sound. No clear-cut refutations have been found for White.

Avatar of Rich-McD

Yes! The Marshall gambit! Any more?

Avatar of dfgh123

queens gambit declined and e5 also use a database and you will get to 1700 online chess

Avatar of pfren

Marshall gambit for a beginner? LOL.

First, you will get lost in the countless variations of it, and second, all your study will be thrown to the wastebin since you won't reach the Marshall starting position once every fourty games...

try - "do you come here often?"

or- "can i buy you a drink?"

the ever popular-"let's get some BBQ and get busy" works well.

some good openings to try.

2... f6 is not a good move, and doesn't even protect the e-pawn.

@Pfren Beginners won't get lost memorizing the variations, they'll just blunder, lose, and learn from it. The only thing Black needs to know are the starting moves. Everything else is touch and go.

I'm assuming that beginners will play other beginners. There shouldn't be anyone carrying a book at 1300.

Although you're right, White can avoid the Marshal. Which isn't a big deal - Black playing the normal Ruy Lopez!

The point is that he will be more likely to meet the "novelty" 1.e4 e5 2.Nh3! than a real Marshall...

So no, he doesn't need to know the opening moves, either. He just needs to know how to move his minor pieces one at a time, castle, and move a couple of central pawns. That's the whole "book" he needs to memorize.

Ha! You put a good move sign (!) on Nh3.

What a dangerous move, White is obviously geared up for f4 a "non sacrificial" King's Gambit. Even Magnus Carlsen fears the line.

What an amazing novelty!

You should not be surprised if an "expert" rated around 930 opens a thread here claiming he has refuted 1...e5 this way, would you?

We have seen plenty of that stuff already...

Not at all! I'm sure you remember the forum about the Dragon variation being "refuted". Needless to say, the Dragon variation is commonly played by experts, masters, and grandmasters. However, we have some "experts" who have refuted it!!! That's pretty stupid, isn't it?

Avatar of pfren

Well, the genius who refuted the Dragon stands by his marvellous discovery. Who am I to judge him?

Avatar of PhantomCapablanca

+0.45 according to Rybka!

LINE HAS BEEN REFUTED

Avatar of klimski

Man, it's simple: choose an opening that has a cool name. That's why I play the Pirc (which I snobbishly pronounce 'pirtsch' and not 'perk')

Seriously though, any opening you pick, you will have to study it. So it doesn't really matter that much.
