Good Defense against d4?

I'm a normal e4 player, but on occasion, i encounter the d4 opening. I haven't got any time to search for replies to d4, so i'm wondering if there are any defenses you guys would suggest? At the moment, i play my replies as basically "trying to control the center" by bringing up the knights. It's basically a flipped giuoco piano (which is what i almost always play).

And while i'm at it, are there any good articles on the scotch? I recently looked into it and it's very similar to what i play. (It's sort of like the giuoco piano i play, but except after i develop knight/bishop i bring out another knight and push the d4 square.)

lol yea. there's lot of other possible moves, but i'm not familiar with any. In any case, i guess i'm better with open games of sorts. in this kind of game, what would be a good defense? :S it seems pretty closed.

other than e5, i also reply with c5 sometimes, but d4 kinda ruins both haha.

Two points.

First, in double queen pawn positions, generally neither player wants to play the queen's knight to the bishop-three square without having played pawn to queen's bishop four. An alternative setup is to play pawn to queen's bishop three and queen's knight to queen two.

Second, in double king pawn positions, after white plays d4 exd4 Nxd4, generally black doesn't want to exchange again on d4, bringing white's queen to d4. A related point is that the opening 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.Qxd4, the Center Game, isn't that bad for white except that black can play Nc6 winning a tempo. So let's say that you just make this instead: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Nxd4 5.Qxd4 - now white has an advantage because the queen can't be driven away easily with a move like Nc6.

Nimzo-Indian, KID (new favorite of mine), and Queen's Gambit Declined (assuming they roll with the Queen's Gambit) are all great.. I train off into Semi-Slav usually. Just some thoughts :)

bigmac30

semi slav is good d4 defence benko and queens indian are also good but you need to be a patient player for the last 2 and the dutch defence is also good system with a simple plan

bigmac30

the e4 variation of benoni can be very messy for black

bigmac30

yes d5 moves are right for e4 players they can sometimes lead to frenchish positions

Flamma_Aquila

If you want something that is solid, and easy to play, try the Dutch Stonewall. It is much easier to play than anything I've seen, and since I only see d4 rarely, I don't want to get into the KID or the Slavs.

As for the Scotch, there is a decent video on youtube you might check out.

As previous posters have mentioned, if someone plays 1. d4, then you can be certain that c4 is coming soon: this is the move that really distinguishes the White position from the Black position.

Because White has an extra tempo to play c4 in the opening, he will have the advantage of more space in the center, and a freer position because he can now play Nc3 without blocking his pawn. As ozzie mentioned, this is one of the reasons why Black players choose to position their Queenside Knight on d7 so they can challenge the White center by playing c6 (to back up the d-pawn) and/or c5 (to create tension or open up the position).

The two most common replies to 1. d4 are 1. Nf6 and 1. d5.

1. Nf6 is the hypermodern approach, and is the beginning of a LOT of different defenses. Common replies by White are 2. c4 and 2. Nf3.

1. d5 is the classical approach, and is usually answered by White with 2. c4 the Queen's Gambit (which is not a true gambit). Black can now choose to accept the gambit, or decline in a variety of ways.

How you want to defend against 1. d4 depends on your style of play and what positions you are comfortable with.

I play the tarrasch against d4, and its pretty much universal against any opening but e4 unless you transpose to the semi tarrasch from the french.

bigmac30

the tarrash is terrible especilly if you are not familiar with the d4 play

asam_2

Then KID will work.

Not sure about Gruenfeld...

If you want to bring up the knights, the tango is the best.
