Good defense against Italian opening or Giuoco Piano

What are some good defenses against this attack. I know some of my openings work, but I want something that will always work. 2 Knights defense seems decent. Can you guys suggest other ones?

Or passive h6 against Fried-Liver, against Giucco...Petrov!

I like the Two Knights best.

Just go for Bc5.

The Hungarian nullifies all white tricks

Except that you have to be careful not to lose as many people do after 4.d4 exd4 5.c3 dxc3?? 6.Qd5 1-0. 5...Na5! I believe is the correct way to deal with this trap.

Bc5 is probably the strongest reaction but there are some variations to learn. Nf6 can be a strong answer to but you have to like dynamic positions with compensation for a pawn. That is not to everybodies liking. It also requires more study than Bc5 due to the wild tactical positions that can arise.

Be7 is the 3th option. It is not wrong but with decent play from white you will get a passive position that honestly is not so much fun to play. However it probably requires the least amount of study.

If you are a e5 player I can recommend the chessbase dvd serie (from Jan Gustafsson) about e4 - e5. He explains the ideas about the itallian really well.

Oh wow, the Hungarian's been proclaimed "not wrong"!  That's a relief.

Well, I would say 'not completely incorrect' although it does lead to a noticeable White advantage.

Since I'm 5-0 up against this opening this post is just a smug grin and a shrug of the shoulders. 3. Bc4 is no big deal.:P

Avatar of bauhaus_chess

It isnt a sound attack for white. Ive heard some giggles when this was played at my club from the top boards.

Avatar of Expertise87

VanillaKnightPOC I sent you a challenge. I'll play White and 3.Bc4 and we can see if it's a big deal or not :)

Avatar of VanillaKnightPOC

It was clearly a tongue in cheek comment. At my level the opening played probably has minimal importance to the outcome of the game. Also the high difference in our rating means you could probably beat me in any opening. So, regretfully I will decline and await defeat in any future games the opening will appear in.

I like more the two knights defense, dinamic play after is plus than a pawn in material.

Avatar of Expertise87

I agree with cameronbaum although people keep talking about this pawn like everyone is going to play 4.Ng5, which isn't even the most common move!

I think French Defense is good. It blocks the fried liver attack

So does the Grob.

I know an NM who recommends the Hungarian for anything following the move 3. Bc4

it is a really solid and safe opening.
