Good Opening Arsenal?

Avatar of NoahBogosh

Hello,

I was wondering if you could recommend to me a good arsenal of openings to have for both black and white, say 3 each. I am looking for some openings that are not widely used. Here are the ones I know so far:

White:

1) Max Lange Gambit

2) King's Gambit

3) The Queen's Gambit (occasionally)

4) Improvisation XD

Black:

1) Scandinavian Defense

2) Pirc Defense

3) King's Indian Defense

4) Sicilian (rarely)

Please recommend three for each side that I do not have listed:

White:

1)

2)

3)

Black

1)

2)

3)

P.S. I am not totally positional, I would say I am a player who is trying to checkmate the other guy during the opening. I like a fast, quickly developed game that will put me in a place to attack his king before he castles. If I miss this opportunity, I immediately start putting pieces into positions where they can get the King and checkmate. So, I am basically a King focused player, who tries to cut off the head before the body has a chance to move. I also like making my King nice and cozy by castling and using openings such as the King's Indian Defense and Pirc defense. You probably need that information to help me choose some openings.

oh and Noah, one should only have one opening that you always stick with (at least for white) because if you have multiple that you like to play there will always be confusion as opposed to rountine-ity (if that is a word) in your opening.....just a thought

If you want to get into some tactics as far as possible, get a look at this:

White:

1) Italian game, with the Evans against 4...Bc5 and 4.Ng5 against 4...Nf6

2) Blackmar-Diemer Gambit against the Scandinavian (1.e4 d5 2.d4) or against 1...d5 (1.d4 d5 2.e4)

3)King's Gambit if you play the King's gambit with 3.Nf3, try 3.Bc4, that's where the real King's gambit players want to be.

Black:

1) 2 Knights Defense against the Italian (you can use some of the lines you looked at when playing white!Wink), with the Traxler against 4.Ng5; and Marshall Attack against the Ruy Lopez.

2)Against 1.d4, play 1...d5 and go for the Albin Countergambit(1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5) or the Tarrasch Defense to the QGD.

3) The Grundfeld Defense can be fun to play, but it's a goddamn theory monster, as it was used frequently in the Karpov-Kasparov matches. Be careful if you play it.

P.D: Take a special look at the Lasker Trap in the Albin, it's one of the most awesome traps you'll ever see!

I recommend an attacking repertoire based on 1.e4 as white. At your level you should play mainly tactical variations.

Against 1...e5 Evans gambit http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1070779. It will teach you a lot about attacking opponent's king.

Against 1...c5 Smith-Morra. I know it's not entirely sound, but up to like 1700 it is very effective. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1141196.

Against 1...e6 Alekhine's gambit. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1258185

what alll have said, since you plays the KG anyway, you should be able to play the Bishops Gambit easily, Its all I play against the accepted

as for wheathe Ruy or Italian, look at them both, but agaist Bc5 in the Italian, play the Evans, its sound, and fun
