Good Openings for White?

The Vienna game with 3. g3 is solid but aggressive - plus its quite rare and will catch your opponents by surprise. I think this video covers pretty much everything you need to know, super easy to learn and play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i14Vseie0XI

honestly, the best move in the vienna is to transpose to a three knights or a petrov

yeah

vienna gambit is dubious and the Frankenstein-Dracula variation gives equality

but also there is this extremely venomous variation in the F-D that is so hard to play as white

blacks ahead in everything except material, white must be careful as to not trap their queen or fall to far behind

Maybe the seemingly quite line of 3. g3?:

  • It can get quite aggressive after f4, f5, g4. White goes for a kingside attack

oh wow I’m surprised GothamChess doesn’t play this considering he loves the Closed Sicilian so much 💀

Literally! They are very similar systems with the fianchettoed bishop and f4 push. The g3 vienna is little-known and somewhat refuted however because it only gives equality.

That line was covered in Krykun 1.e4 and he showed that white can actually play for a slight edge and easier game here. Playing for only 2 results

I’m not sure Gotham actually likes the closed Sicilian all that much, not sure but I don’t think so. He recommends 2.Nc3 vs the Sicilian in his Chessable course but with the approach of going d4 next move. The only move we can’t play d4 too is Nc6 and he opts for the Tiviakov Sicilian with bb5
