Really depends on preference. For more experienced players, go with 1. d4, as it opens the opportunity for some pretty intense games that a beginner might not do well in. (i.e. Queens Gambit Accepted, Colle System, London System, ect…). 1. e4 offers a more predictable and foundational approach to chess opening theory, which can be easier to understand if you’re new to chess.

1.d4 takes more space in the center. 1.e4 is one step closer to 0-0. So both moves are best.
