Grunfeld all the way. I am currently a KID addict but in my opinion black's only "fun" line is the classical with 6.Be2. In the Saemisch(sp) black is usually busted after the slightest inaccuracy and White's fianchetto system is a pain to get play against as well. The Grunfeld is basically the Sicilian defense of 1.d4 openings. Just started studying the Grunfeld myself to try something different.
Grunfeld or King's Indian
A Grunfled will most likely occur in an open position where you are using your piece activity to combat (or dismantle) white's center. A KID can have many types of positions and plans but usually they are slower manuevering games in closed or semi-closed positions.
There are 2(?) grandmaster repetoire books on the grunfeld if you decide to go that route. Haven't read them personally but have enjoyed other books in the series. As for King's Indian: I've heard good things about Bologan's "King's Indian: A Repetoire for Black" but you may not like how old the book is (2009). Maybe someone knows if the book is still relevant or has a more current suggestion.
Well maybe you are both blitz players who think sharp and violent is everything. KID may not be great at top level but man its a lot of fun and theres a lot of ways to play it. I would recommend Bronstein on the King's Indian as an eyeopening read even if you dont adopt the opening. Certainly changed my game and yes I do play Sicilian as black against e4 for about 20 years now. Nothing compares to a kings indian though, where as black you get the deliciousness of f5 after white closes the centre frequently. The bishop can coordinate perfectly from c8, the knights maneuver well. I like positions with a knight on c5 after pawn has come to d5 or exchanged on e5. I found, although maybe I did not explore it far enough, the grunfeld insufficient for my needs positionally.
Hi I'm trying to add a nf6 line to my reperatoire but I can't pick between the Grunfeld and the King's Indian. I'm about 1950 USCF. Can anyone tell me the style of each opening and give some reccomendations?
