Hamppe-Meitner attack. Why there are 42 games with 7...Qxe4 but none with 7...d4, the best for SF?

I guess you know the famous Hammpe  - Meitner game, 1872 (or 1869, according to chess24)

, also called "The immortal draw"

It went like that.

According to the database, there has been another 41 games following the same first 7 moves since then, and all of them went 7...Qxe4 (the last of them in June 2019), as Meitner played. But when you run the engine, 7...Qxe4 is only the third move, evaluated +0.64, quite an advantage, while 7...d4+ is black advantage (-0.5)

and 7...Nf6 is given as equal.

Why nobody has ever tried 7...d4+? Any idea?

So?

Because people who play this line nowadays are almost certainly trying to get a pre-arranged draw.

That was what I thought. So maybe one day, this romantic, astonishing line could have a revival.
