If you can't first clearly define what you mean by "best" then you shouldn't expect a good answer.

spawkle529

There is no such thing as "best" because different openings suit different styles of play.

VivekBlogger

Sicilian Defense or "c5" is the the strongest reply to e4.

slowdeath22

IMO, e5 is best, Sicilian Najdorf is 2nd, Caro-Kan is 3rd.

Seriously....

There is no quick fix, no "best" only what is best for you and no-one on here can tell you what that is. playing related structures can help, Slav/Caro Kann as black, London System as white, King Indian/Pirc as black, Kings Indian Attack as white etc but your decision is based on the positions you enjoy vs the time you have to study the opening

You are correct, there is no 'best' opening. There are a number of openings that end up in drawn positions and therefore they are all tied for 1st. However, there are a number of openings that do not end up in drawn positions and in fact lose the game. Playing something like the French or KID will net you a loss if your opponent plays perfectly and that will not be the best for you.

AussieMatey

In some openings you just die a slowdeath.

Tnks!!! For all your valuable comments

Trust me there isn't any best opening against e4 but there are some strong opening like c5 (sicilian defense) c6 (caro-kann) and even e6 (French defense).

1...b6, c6, c5, d6, d5, e6, e5, g6, Nf6, Nc6 are all playable and there are many ways to play it...

williamn27

If you like counterattacking, try c5

If you don't want to be attacked early on, e5

If you have no problem leaving your king in the center and maneuvering on opposite sides, e6

If you dare him to attack you while not giving him any real target, c6

If you like to handle a big pawn center, Nf6

If you don't like memorising, d6 or g6 (or b6) setting up a Hippo

If you don't mind about gambits, try d5 (2.exd5 Nf6 followed by c6)

If you want to try something unusual, Nc6 is best.

If you don't understand how useful the center is, just do a6, a5, h6, h5, Na6, or Nh6

If you are quite crazy and brave, f6, f5, or g5

If you feel that you are a much stronger player, or if you are trying to make fun of your opponent, b5

Wait, is that all? Yes!

"If you don't want to be attacked early on, e5"

Not really...

I second that... a multitude of age old gambit options too designed to do just that

Nice list! I'm saving your list because I'm thinking of making a spreadsheet that statistically answers this common question, and your mentioned attributes are good ones I'll want to include.

By 'not being attacked early' I mean that Black doesn't allow White to get a consdierable kingside advantage, as all other moves does.

However, I didn't say about space or anything more complicated because I want to make it sound easier to understand.

Well thankyou! TBH I wasn't serious at making that list lol :)
