How many lines do you know?
So it seems like lots of you don't have a good idea of how many lines you know. How do you practice your openings? Do you not need to practice them?
On average I spend about 1 to 2 hours each study session, with a book, an engine, and a notebook to take notes, exploring one particular variation. The next day, I do it again for a different variation. Rinse and repeat.
I choose my variations based on the lines that I face the most.
I average about 15 moves per line, in terms of my prep. Though some lines extend longer. I tend to explore and study until both colors have castled and developed all their minor pieces, and I have a decent idea of the middle-game plans for each side.
I play at the 2200-2300 level, and I believe my amount of opening study is a bit on the low ("lazy") end, compared to other players at my level. But I'm okay with that.
Friend, you think your opening repertoire is lazy? I've been playing the same depth lines since I Was 1500... I just play faster lol
