There are 1000s of chess openings. I believe chess.com lists 3000 named openings. There are certainly more, as not all openings and variations are named.

For me, the best openings are:

White

  • Ruy Lopez
  • Open Sicilian: Bg5 Najdorf, Richter-Rauzer

Black

  • Sicilian Najdorf
  • Nimzo-Indian
  • King's Indian

I believe so too. I already found over 1,500 myself. It includes all variations and established opening lines.

Is there any 'contents' page on chess.com that lists all the openings in their database?

As mentioned above there is an opening listing. There is no opening counter though so it's hard to tell how many there are. I just looked up that it lists 3000 lol.

I started a list here: https://lichess.org/study/jxNZZROM

It's difficult to track all the different variations and transpositions. The Ruy Lopez has an absolute mountain of variations.
