The mistake was 4. ... Bxc3.  Why move the piece twice?  Castle and you are up on development.  The position is equal after only 4 moves.  Yes, White has a pawn but the knight is swinging in the breeze.  Getting the pawn back and maintaining equality or better shouldn't be that hard.
