how to know when to work on openings

When you play a game and lose material or get attacked within 10 moves or so then knowing the principles of the opening are needed to study. A common thing people do is start the middle game before castling. If you haven’t castled within 8-10 moves that is best. There are some exceptions but not many.

If you keep losing a piece during a game then studying tactics will be much more helpful.

If you have even endings and lose at that part of the game then studying endgames is a better option.

For me, it’s connecting my rooks or placing them on pivotal files before I start attacking.
