Hungarian Defense

So I'm looking for a repertoire as black.I've tried almost everything Sicilian,Pirc,French,Caro Kann,Alekhine and the one opening I really liked was the Alekhine because it's so counter-attacking and has some nice traps in it.Also it's not very studied by players at my level.Lately I've been thinking to try 1...e5 2...Nc6.I want to build a solid repertoire as I find myself more of a solid positional player. So against Ruy Lopez I plan using the Berlin Wall and was thinking of Hungarian Defense as a response to the Italian Game.It looked solid to me(I mean Karpov has played it).The problem is I couldn't even find much information about Hungarian Defense.I saw NM aww-rats video(really helpful) and some topics in the forums too but nothing too valuable. So can someone please help me with some information on the defense?Everything is appreciated(books would be better). Also please don't start saying I shouldn't worry about openings.I devote my time to every part of a chess game and I don't wanna leave the opening behind. Thanks

If you want to avoid main lines I think the 3...d6 defense vs. the Italian game is a more dynamic choice, with ideas such as 4. d3?! Na5 and 4. 0-0!? Bg4. I also see my fill of 4. h3 and I typically respond 4...f5!? though that may not be so principled.

Of course White has better responses, such as 4. Nc3 though then a transposition to the Hungarian with 4...Be7 may be in order.  Probably most critical therefore are:

  • 4. c3, and
  • 4. d4

The former was featured in the following famous game:

As to the latter 4. d4 Black again has 4...Bg4, or 4...exd4 is possible, and indeed this constitutes a defense to the Scotch Gambit:

Hope this helps; I've actually recently made the decision to switch to 3...Nf6

I play 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d3 Be7, which can transpose. 5. O-O O-O 6. Re1 d6 7. c3 Na5 8. Bb5 a6 9. Ba4 b5 10. Bc2 c5 is the transposition into the Ruy that everyone mentions, but never gives. At move 7 other moves besides a4 and a3 allow the bishop to be exchanged off with Na5. 5. c3 O-O 6. O-O d6 7. Bb3 Na5 8. Bc2 c5 is another line with similiar ideas.

5. Nc3 never stuck me as much of a problem, with the Bishop on e7 I don't really know what this is suppose to acomplish; Bg5 Bxf6 and Nd5 is still technically possible, but with Na5 and c6 possible I don't see any reason to fear it.

Other then that, I don't know anything about the Hungarian defense.

Harding and Botterill, in their 1977 book on the Italian Game, conclude that, "The Hungarian Defence can only be played for a draw. White should have an edge in most lines." This is rip off from Wikipedia, but i think stats support the claim that black does not win as often when playing Hungarian Defense.

the only upside i can see for choosing d6 over 3..nf6 is that you avoid 4 ng5 but this line is harder to play for white than it is for black. while the positions after 3..d6 white gets to do whatever he wants in the center practically speaking.
