Perhaps their supply line dried up? I had the same thing happen to me - I scrubbed a 1 metre portion of their supply line with soap, and they went back to whereever they came from. This was of course in a rental.
i put ant poison in our house.
no, there were ants the whole time, just mildly (we thought.) when we put in the poison and left, they ate some and brought it back to their nest, killing more. when we finally got back, the house was loaded with ants.

It was probably loaded with ants from the outset, it's just that when you came back they were dead.
