Ive stopped from Chess.com for awhile but i havent stopped playing chess. Ive finally reached the 1700 ratings but ive encountered a big problem. I love studying openings and building repretoires and i cant stay faithful too one rep. I think this is really hurting my game because i study so many different openings that i dont study any opening as in depth as id like please any advise is good

Then stop doing it.  And study one opening in depth.

But is it really so bad to study more then one response to e4 at my level?

AndyClifton

Then do it!  What in the world are you asking us for?

I'd suggest reading the book "How to build your chess opening repertoire" by Steve Giddins. The book itself isn't about specific lines, but touches on the questions of how broad a repertoire should be, how deep to study it, when to change lines, etc.

Who is Steve Giddins?

AndyClifton

I think he's the Backyard Professor.

He's not a GM, IIRC, but the point of the book isn't to provide razor-sharp analysis of opening lines. It's about the method behind the development of a repertoire.
