i discovered an Opening variation in the Kings knight opening. (Normal variation)

If h4 was any good it would have been discovered a long time ago. It breaks opening principles. There is no game with it in the chess.com of around 2,5m games. Also there is no need to prepare against h4 as black. In conclusion if you want to invent and popularise an opening look past move 3.

I agree its not a move for higher level play @MsnChess712.
It seems to surprise many opponents tho.
And if black does not do engine prep for h4, white gets an equal position according to the engine going to the middle game. what more does one want?

BongSymmetric

As far as the level is concerned, h4 works perfectly till 1700 rating (as far as tested) on chess.com and till 1900 rating on lichess.com

i just won another game

" And how many people do you think will play so accurately against h4."

Every good player!

@Magnus_Chase19 That is the point.
You tell me before a tournament will anyone study h4, its a surprise move. and bxc3 is the move 92% of the people play according to data. nc6 is a very normal move

this is the point you know, if you have not studies this, you will not know those moves are inaccuracies. this is the point of this variation.

Read this once. @laskersnephew.

This is like a prep-bomb. To sustain advantage black has to play moves you will see only in 2200 games. Even after playing that black only has a 0.5 advantage. In other 99% moves white ends up with 0 advantage and black too; +1 advantage or +4 advantage

BongSymmetric

Not being rude or something but I want to play you with this opening. Don't do rigorous engine prep cuz that loses the point of the opening.

One cannot "discover|" a move that thas been played thousands of times before.  Do you realize how ,many games of chess have been played in the last 200 years?

BongSymmetric

@ponz111, thats why i did not say "invent" i said discovered

BongSymmetric

Both in lichess and chess.com databases, this ofcourse hasnt been played

"I just won another game."  Against how strong a player?  Why do you want to play a bad opening just to trick weak players?

When you look  for bad moves it just weakens your own chess.

but you did not discover. Keith Hayward and I wrote a book on  the Ponziani.  .we did not discover that rare played opening.

What we did was to find hundreds of good ways to play that opening. One thing we had going for us that it is a sound opening. does not give away the advantage quickly. Then Carlsen played it and won. Then the 2nd ranked player in the world played Black against the Ponziani and he quickly fell  into a losing position .

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.h4 d5 = or 3.h4 Nf6 4.Nc3 d5 =

d5 has been only played in 45 games till date on lichess after h4. hundreds of games with nf and bc5. this shows very less people do play d5. It has very few record on any website. I feel d5 is a very playable line for white. I feel an equal position after d5 is a worthy risk as other than that its all dreamy attacking position for white. Bg4 isnt a very great move as just be2 and nothing more, normal chess position better for white. i am now on a one loss and 18 win record with this opening. It really does seem to work dilligently @laskersnephew

not only does h4 waste a tempo, but it leaves a big hole on g4, so black can give you an annoying pin with bg4 which also (along with nf6) covers the h5 square from the pawn advancing.

It's just a bad move. At least a move like 3.a3 or even 3.h3 doesnt do as much damage and is marginally useful despite wasting time.

Order in openings matter. Your idea woudnt be so crackpot if black coudnt alter his course of movements to account for your early pawn push. but he totally can. But even if black also castled kingside, pawn storming in a double king-pawn position with an early h thrust is clumsy, without f3, supporting g4. if black plays h5, black can just play h6, and without getting g4 going (which is very hard because h4, means there is no h3 to support g4), your attack pretty much stops there.

In the 2019 "Big Database" from Chessbase, 3.h4 has been played only 10 times. The total score for white is 0 Wins, 0 Draws, 10 losses. That looks about right

Are you just being sarcastic or really @infestationPit
