You want me to call 911 ? Oh! wait; I thought it was a murder.
I'm getting killed
Hi Kingdom_Hearts--the problem is that 1. e4 and 1. d4/c4/Nf3 lead into very different types of openings; you'll have to learn responses for both since one is unlikely to transpose into the other. That being said, you could check out the Hedgehog, a catch-all defensive system that's difficult for beginners to crack. There are also a number of replies that are playable versus all four of the common openers described above. For example, 1...c6 will give you the Caro-Kann against e4 and a Slav or similar against those other moves. 1...e6 will get you a French or a Queen's Gambit / Indian Defense, and 1...d6 will either get you a Pirc/Modern or an Old Indian. For that matter there's also the flexible 1...g6, leading to a Pirc, Dragon Sicilian, or King's Indian Defense, 1...Nf6 which is Alekhine's or pretty much any of the above, and 1...c5, which goes into the Sicilian against e4 or the Benoni / English Symmetrical against those other moves. It's worth noting that many masters adopt similar but not identical openings vs. e4 and d4; for example, the Dragon Sicilian is comparable to the King's Indian Defense formation but not exactly the same. So learning one will make the other easier. Same with those c6/e6/d5 systems, like the Caro-Kann and the Slav or the French and the Queen's Gambit Declined.

Thanks, I'll get right to work.

I've been getting killed on the board recently because I haven't been playing in awhile. For some reason I'm cursed with not being able to play as the black in any openings and get murdered because of it. I love the stonewall for white but I've become to sticky to it. Is there an opening I can memorize that is great against anything white throws? I'M just really angry at losing so many games and my rating falling so fast. Thanks. -KH
