well i like the karo cann for black but sometimes your opponent can build a smothering pawn wall on the kingside if you don't watch it. for white i like gambits like the king's gambit because you have an extra intiative. but on the king's gambit good pawn play by black can break you like a twig.
In need of direction

Learn a few basic responses to common opening systems for black and white and spend time on tactics. The biggest mistake people starting out make is spending way too much time on openings instead of learning about basic endgames, winning technique (for a theoretically won game) and learning to play with initiative and conduct proper attacks.
So in summary, I'd say
- An opening is just a means to getting to a playable middlegame without a disadvantage at worst. It is not a silver bullet for winning chess games.
- Learn All the Opening Guidelines / Principles you can (not the same as openings) and until you are much stronger, don't deviate from them. At the level you are playing right now, you can survive in MOST unknown openings by following good guidelines alone.
- Learn a few opening systems to get you by, but even then, this should be incremental. Learn "one" new move everytime you go over a game you played where you felt you deviated from an opening. Don't try to memorize/cram things in bulk.
- Pay more attention to tactics, endgames and basic strategic elements, especially at the stage you are in right now.
If you still think you MUST know the openings to win games, post one of your losses in this forum so that we can have a look.
I can bet that 90+% of your mistakes are NOT because you did not know the theory.

Very good answers i thank you all for your time. I very much like a few of your suggestions and will definetly heed your advice Shivsky. Ill be around these forums quite a bit just learning im sure, so as soon as a question jumps out at me ill post my game and ask. Seems like an awesome community here. Thanks again for the help!
Ive always known the game, but have just began to see my potential when i played a couple games vs someone at work a couple months ago. Ever since then ive been playing at least 10 games a day, but im getting in a bit deep having not had any guidance as to which openings to practice, and play before moving on to others.
So far my strategy is this. Black i will either open d6 or f5... If im white i open e4, Nf3 (unless they dont contest the center, in which case i choose d4) and try to mimick what i can of the book lines i have in my head from watching so many grandmaster games on youtube. My question is, as someone who is an adeptly fast learner but whos current skill is still very much amatuer....Which openings as white and black should i study in depth before moving on to variations/other openings. I feel like im going into battle with foreign guns that i dont really know how to operate. I at least need a place to start that i can adapt to different situations untill i master more openings
