If black playes 1.. e5, is it the scicillian opposite colors, so you should know some theory about the scicillian

Pulpofeira

Sure is good, why not try it? But, are you a beginner? If you are, I think it's better to play 1. e4 at least a couple of years and try some gambits.

You will get different advice from different people and will get to the point where you just decide you will do what you will do anyway because chess is a personal thing where YOU have to make the decisions and no one else.

I would suggest you just enjoy the game and try different openings..

Ask Spassky.

To the OP...As far as you know what do you think might be the goals of the English opening ? It would be useful to write them down perhaps. It doesn't matter if you are wrong - it's useful to think about the game :-)

Here's what I think:  I think you're a friggin cop looking to entrap the innocent.

Too bad you don't know Dutch.

"Citer" in French, all depends, dadgad, on your language preference.  When you want to draw, play in french, it's the language of diplomacy.

no one ever plays d41!!

SpicyJalapeno

i know

Sceadungen

Statistically it is the highest scoring opening.

However this merely reflects the fact that strong players use it often.

Start with e4

cosmicharmonic

My God, 1. e4?? how droll.

Sure it might be best, but since everyone knows this, and since everyone and their parakeet is loaded for bear and completely and undeniably prepared for, having built their entire black repetoir based on stopping it, walking into their plans makes no sense.

1. g4!! gives them a real shock.  They'll laugh, let down their guard, and you'll crush them due to their haughty overconfidence.

1. c4 can transpose into your typical Queen's Gambit or Indian lines.

It's a sensible move.
