Chess is about a constant stream of ideas and discovery, whether it's a new exploitation of a tactical theme, or a new acquired level of understanding of something in the game; it's a science really. But it's a science where all the information is given to you -- all on that board. And it always has been. Chess books and the like merely help you interpret what can be discovered more easily.

Absolutely, I prefer a game that I lost but came up with lots of juicy ideas, rather than a game I played lazily and won but had to do nothing creative at all (in other words, my opponent made it easy for me). Although I would prefer to not have any colossal blunders.
