It is said that 1. d4 d5 2. c4 is the best opening per stats.
Is d4 better than e4
I play both, d4 to avoid caro kann/french when I know my opponent plays it.
If I were a caro/french player I'd play 1...c6/e6 regardless...
True. Yet when my opponent plays c6/e6 I don't like to have a pawn on e4.
i play both but d4 has closed position that i like it.but i dont think d4 be better that e4.every opening has its trait and it depends what do you know about it!
1.Nf3!!
Based on what my opponent does I can transpose to 1.d4 1.e4 or 1.c4 openings, while avoiding the ones I dislike.
I think they are equally good in general.
The reason that 1.d4 has better stats might be that 1.e4 is more popular among weaker players and they "spoil" the statistics.
I play both but my personal stats with 1.e4 are better. However I sometimes employ 1.d4 against weaker players because their knowledge of closed positions is inferior
d4 seems to be a better weapon to use in chess.com because most of us here has an 1. e4 fetish.
Otherwise, I completely agree with Dzikus
the only real issue is level of play and the opponent's response. e4 is overplayed at all levels and *every* player over 1300 or so has some sort of valid response to it. d4 gives more trouble to low-medium rated players simply because it is seen a little less often (largely because most mid ranked players prefer open boards and fancy tactics). For a long time my opening was queen's pawn regardless of what the opponent did, leading me to spend some time learning the scandanavian...
I think above 1600 though, they equalize as players know better responses to both.
D4 is far worse than e4
ABSOLUTE BALONEY!
It was observed by NewInChess.com in 2000 that across over 730,000 games that opened with one of those two moves, that White scored 54.1% with 1.e4 and 56.1% with 1.d4. The last 13 years have not changed these percentages drastically by any stretch of the imagination with the number of games played. Worst case scanerio is that 1.d4 currently leads by maybe 1.8% instead of 2%, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's over a 2% lead now-a-days.
1.d4 - Best by Test, AND STATISTICS!

And if you adjust for the fact that beginners play e4 more often and are less good at keeping the first move advantage?
e4 ofcourse!
why?!
Like Fischer said "Best by test"
Of course, if you are the real Fischer!

Beginners play 1. e4 because they don't know 1. d4, c4, Nf6 are that good. That's why they are called beginners.
I seldom play 1.e4 because I like the others so much that make me think why 1.e4?
Whats your opening e4 or d4 and why??
