Is sicilian defence playable for beginners?

Beginners should definitely try the Sicilian defense, but as most have heard, it is very sharp(dangerous for both sides).  There is lots of theory (one of the most heavily analyzed openings) to learn if you want to play it in tournaments.  I am currently studying it again after having abandoned it many years ago after repeatedly getting severely mauled on the black side of it.  It seems to be more dangerous for black than for white.  But then again, if you absolutely need a win with black against 1.e4, or if you love wild unbalanced tactical posistions, this is probably the best bet.  Get "Starting Out: The Sicilian" by John Emms -- I love this book.

Oh no no no no!

Sicilian is the  VERY LAST opening I would recommend for a beginner

I learned a lot of sicilian theory like the dragon and pin variation, and I myself am a beginner. I wanted to learn it because I really liked the opening and it's principles and stuff however when I started playing games with it I realized that people at my level don't play into sicilian theory, an open sicilian is uncommon at beginner level, they play weird stuff that just takes you out of opening theory and not in good territory and I don't recommend it, but when I start gaining raring like maybe 1600 one day, then I will for sure without a doubt come back to the sicilian, but for now I will stick to my French.

@fcakb

You give a game where you say you and your opponent played badly and then try to discourage others based on your own poor play. So lame.

Also on a 10 year old thread. Basically just going out of your way to be a downer to everyone else in the community.

Sicilian is a great opening at all levels. It's one of the most fun, exciting and interesting openings. In any opening mistakes can be made, you just have to learn from them. If you don't start learning now, then you never will. Fearing mistakes is fearing failure. If you fear failure then you will never be able to take the steps towards success.

Sicilian is awesome! By nature it is a sound opening, controlling the centre! I would say e5 is better for beginners, but Sicilian is perfectly fine! White wants to play d4, so you either control it with c5 or e5, or you counter strike by preparing d5 with e6 or c6! Scandi and Pirc are also fine but less good than the Main Four!

@fcakb

I bet that was a fun game to play! Fun and exciting chess is something I would promote to a beginner, because when the beginner develops into a club level player, at least the Berlin endgame won’t appear all the time!

im getting bored with e4 and d4 yes i want to switch openings for a change so is it possible to play sicilian defence? thankyou

It might barely be playable if you learn the concept and all the lines. Still, not common for beginners and I would not recommend it.

Chessflyfisher

No. It is too complicated according to my USCF Master friends.

SamuelAjedrez95

Yes, because some preachy, patronising gatekeeper told us we're not smart enough to play the Sicilian, we should never bother trying.

"Sicilian is too sharp for a beginner like you! 🙂 Just play simple openings like the Caro Kann and London! 🙂" 🤢

As a fellow beginner, I would learn the basic ideas, but I wouldn't learn to many lines. The reason for this, is that no beginners are going to play into those lines, and the game will probably deviate from theory in the first 8 moves, and it will just be a waste of time to learn these.

What's your problem with Caro-Kann?

Justice for Caro Kann! 🐸 Frog approved

RatkoGavrilo1

Nothing is wrong with Caro Kann, its naturally compared to Sicillian because both move the c pawn on move 1. Its just the double standarts that is annoying for a lot of people.

Some people act like playing Sicillian makes you lose on move 1 already, while ignoring Caro requires just as much understanding to really play.

Caro and Sicilian players don’t have to fight! As a member of both communities, I want frog peace ✌️ 🐸

@FrogboyWarpz

You shall have your frog peace.

No quarrel with the Caro Kann players. Only with the Sicilian haters.

I completely agree! 🐸

A great day for frogkind 🐸

Yes-It's an amazing defense, but you have to be extremely careful, can lead to extremely sharp positions. I've played it and won many times.

Not recommended because it has a lot of theory, there are certainly easier choices

Sicilian is playable for Beginners. The other beginner playing white won't attack ferociously as he is as clueless in theory as the black player

It's blunder fest as normal.

Axelembrechts

you can play the siccilian for beginners, but just a diffrend lines and a diffrend variation

otherwise you should not play it, here are a few things that a begginer can play
